Whether this is a new trend remains to be seen, but Wout van Aert has been wearing the Giro Aerohead time trial helmet several times this season in group stages, most recently at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad on Saturday.
The team seems to be using every opportunity to get maximum speed. Van Aert was active during the race, but had to settle for 11th place in the group finish. The Aerohead has been part of Giro's helmet range for several years and underwent a refresh before last year's Tirreno-Adriatico, provoking mixed opinions in the cycling world with its unique design.
Van Aert and his teammates have been using an older version of the Aerohead 1.0 helmet, which has a removable visor and can also be used in group races due to its comfort. Van Aert and his teammates used two different versions of the Aerohead time trial helmet. Van Aert's had side vents, while the others did not.
It should be added that van Aert used a regular group stage helmet in the Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne race on Sunday. A time trial helmet certainly helps cut down on the seconds needed, but it also reduces the comfort of use - we'll keep an eye on the game.
