Italian police arrested Romāns Vainšteins, who was crowned world champion in road group racing in 2000, at Bergamo airport in connection with non-payment of alimony.
Vainstein, 52, had arrived by plane from Latvia when he was handcuffed and taken to a police station by authorities. Vainstein is divorced from his wife, but has not paid the legal amount of child support for his daughter, who lives in Bergamo.
In 2018, the daughter sued her father because he had not paid child support since 2013 and owed her 70,000 euros. Based on this, an Italian court issued an arrest warrant. Weinstein must spend 4 months behind bars, but it is not known whether the daughter has any hope of getting the money she lost or not.
