Euroopa meistriks kroonitud Toon Aerts: algas minu teine karjäär

Toon Aerts crowned European champion: my second career has begun

Toon Aerts, crowned European Cyclo-cross champion, earned one of the most emotional victories of his career, becoming European champion after a dramatic finish duel with Thibau Nys. For the 32-year-old Belgian, the gold medal not only marked a return to winning ways, but also what he himself called his "second career".

"It's unbelievable," Aerts said. "My second career starts today. A lot has happened in the last few years. I didn't think everything could fall into place again."

The race itself was nerve-wracking from start to finish. Aerts looked strong in the early laps, remaining calm when others made mistakes on the sandbanks of Middelkerke. When Dutchman Pim Ronhaar launched an attack on the penultimate lap, the Belgian veteran held back, relying instead on experience. Patience paid off: Ronhaar’s late mistake opened up an opportunity, and Aerts passed Nys in the final stretch to claim the European Championship.

Aerts returns to the top of the field after several turbulent seasons away from the limelight. His victory also restores Belgian pride in cyclo-cross after years of Dutch dominance and sends a strong message ahead of this winter's World Championships.

"It hasn't been an easy time," he added, fighting back tears. "But this is what I made all these sacrifices for."
