Estonian women's club started the Vuelta in 17th place

Laura Lizette Sanderi and Aidi Gerde Tuisk started the Vuelta with their home team Team Coop-Repsol. The Norwegian team finished 17th out of 21 women in the 8.1 km women's race in Barcelona.

Tuisk crossed the finish line with the top five of his club, Sander was 8 seconds behind. The victory was claimed by the US-registered Lidl-Trek (average speed 51.1 km/h), 3 seconds behind Team SD Worx - Protime and Liv AlUla Jayco. The red leader's jersey was donned by 38-year-old Dutchwoman Ellen van Dijk.

"Last year my team also won the time trial, but I crashed on the last corner and had to retire from the Vuelta two days later. So I don't have the best memories," van Dijk recalled. "But I like women's races, especially with this team. Today before the start, the team director Jeroen Blijlevens came to me and said that it would be great if I crossed the finish line first. Today the plan worked and it's a great honour for the team that I can wear the leader's jersey."

The Vuelta has seven stages planned, with a 99 km group stage tomorrow.
