At the ongoing European Track Cycling Championships in Heusden-Zolder, Belgium, Great Britain's Anna Morris broke the world record twice in the 4000m individual pursuit. The Welsh cyclist covered the distance in 4:28.306 in the qualification and 4:25.87 in the final, beating Italy's Vittoria Guazzini by 7 seconds.
"The end was very difficult," Morris admitted. "I got extra strength when I saw Guazzini on the same straight in the final stages of the race. It was my first time winning the European Championship and the world record made it even more special."
The women's pursuit distance was extended this year from 3,000 meters to 4,000 meters, like the men's. Before this weekend, the women's world record was 4:30.752, held by New Zealand rider Bryony Botha.
