The current Tour de France – and cycling in general – has seen some truly crazy helmets. In both road racing and time trial, helmet designs have become increasingly bizarre in recent years. We've become so accustomed to it that models that would have caused complete outrage a few years ago now hardly attract any attention.
However, journalists on site at the Tour investigated why one of the favorites to win, Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease a Bike), was wearing a different color helmet than most of his teammates.
The only other rider on the team to wear a different colored helmet is Wout Van Aert, whose helmet is painted in the Red Bull design, in accordance with his personal sponsorship deal with the energy drink brand. Is the same true for Vingegaard's red helmet?
The two-time Tour winner's custom-made helmet is the main reason for the sponsorship deal between Visma-Lease a Bike and Danish company Bygma. Bygma is one of the largest suppliers of tools, building materials and accessories in Denmark. Bygma's company colors are red and white - the same as the Danish national flag.
When asked why only Vingegaard and not the entire team is wearing these colors, Team Visma | Lease a Bike did not give a specific answer. Apparently, this is a confidentiality condition.
