Reigning Tour de France and Giro d'Italia winner and world group stage champion Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates - XRG) is among the nominees for the prestigious Laureus Sportsman of the Year award. The other nominees in the male sportsman of the year category are tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen, swimmer Léon Marchand and pole vaulter Armand Duplantis.
The 26-year-old Slovenian is considered to have a good chance of winning the award, as it is a unique achievement in the history of cycling. The previous cyclist to win the award was Lance Armstrong (in 2003), but he was later stripped of it due to a doping scandal.
Among the cyclists nominated in the World Action Sportsperson of the Year category are Olympic mountain bike cross champion Tom Pidcock (Q36.5 Pro Cycling), along with skateboarder Yuto Horigome and snowboarder Chloe Kim.
Laureus Awards nominees are selected by international media representatives, while the winners are selected by the 69-member Laureus Sports Committee, which is made up of sports legends. Last year, the men's award went to tennis player Novak Djokovic and the women's award went to footballer Aitana Bonmatí.
This year's ceremony will take place on April 21 in Madrid.
