Tour de France'i korraldajate otsus lisada velotuuri viimase etapi lõppfaasis kolm munakivitõusu Montmartre linnaosas, on toonud kaasa ratturite kriitikatormi. Kui tavaliselt on viimane etapp olnud enamjaolt mõnus kulgemine ja viimastel kilomeetritel on võitja selgitamine olnud sprinterite pärusmaa, siis seekord tõotab lõpplahendus Champs-Elysées'l kujuneda üllatusterohkemaks.
The deck could be shuffled by a cobblestone climb during the 132.3 km stage. On the final stage, riders will reach Paris after 51.7 km, followed by four laps on the traditional Champs-Élysées circuit, which includes an intermediate sprint at the finish line. They will then head onto a separate loop leading north to the Category 4 Côte de la Butte Montmartre climb, which is 1.1 km long with an average gradient of 5.9%.
At the end of the stage, three laps will be completed on an extended 16.7 km Champs-Élysées/Montmartre circuit, where the Montmartre climb will likely be decisive in determining the winner of the final stage. This climb was also featured in last year's 272 km road race at the Paris Olympics, where riders sped past the famous Sacré-Cœur Basilica at the summit. The same church will once again be a prominent landmark in this year's Tour.
However, the change means that the final stage of the Tour may not be a matter for sprinters alone. Many riders were frustrated because the cobblestone sections increase the number of unexpected incidents, which in turn raises the riders' stress levels. Two-time Tour overall winner Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) was also critical.
"Montmartre'l oli olümpial mõnus sõita. See tundus hea, seal oli palju rahvast ja tõeliselt hea atmosfäär. Aga olümpial, kui nad Montmartre'le jõudsid, oli alles vaid 50 ratturit. Nüüd aga, kui sõidame Touril, on seal 150 meest võitlemas positsiooni pärast väga kitsal tõusul. See saab olema väga huvitav. Ma arvan, et see võib lõpuks tähendada rohkem stressi, kui me tegelikult sooviksime. Aga eks näis," rääkis 28-aastane taanlane.
Wout van Aert (Team Visma | Lease a Bike), who triumphed on the final stage of the 2021 Tour: "I'm not actually a big fan of it. I think it's going to be a dangerous stage. The course is obviously one that suits me, especially with the final climb being just 6 km from the finish. It opens up opportunities for Classics specialists like me. But it overlooks the fact that at the Olympics, we arrived there in a group of 50, whereas now we're dealing with the entire Tour peloton, where many GC contenders are still defending something. I expect chaos, and unfortunately, it feels to me like we are consciously looking for it."
