The opening stage of the Volta ao Algarve cycling tour, which began in Portugal, ended in chaos as organizers failed to adequately mark the finish straight. The majority of cyclists, including Madis Mihkels (EF Education – EasyPost), took a wrong turn, despite Mihkels finishing second in the bunch sprint.
The results of the opening stage were annulled due to the incident, but it is certain that Mihkels would have been a major contender in the bunch sprint. Watch the video to see the conclusion of the opening stage. Today's second stage culminates in a final climb, and Mihkels does not have significant chances of winning.
