New trend? Wout van Aert flirts with the time trial helmet

Whether this is a new trend remains to be seen, but Wout van Aert has competed in road races several times this season wearing the Giro Aerohead time trial helmet. Most recently, the Visma-Lease a Bike rider used it last Saturday at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad.

It appears the team is exploring every option to gain maximum speed. Van Aert was active during the race but had to settle for 11th place in the group sprint. The Aerohead has been part of Giro's helmet lineup for several years and underwent a refresh before last year's Tirreno-Adriatico, sparking mixed opinions in the cycling world with its distinctive design.

Van Aert and his teammates have used the older type of Aerohead 1.0 helmet, which features a removable visor and can be used in road races for comfort. Van Aert and his teammates used two different types of Aerohead time trial helmets. Van Aert's had side vents, while others did not.

It should be noted that at Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne on Sunday, van Aert used a standard road race helmet. While a time trial helmet certainly helps shave off crucial seconds, it also reduces comfort in use – we'll keep an eye on it.
