USA pro cycling team EF Education - EasyPost rider Madis Mihkels confirmed to Bike Fanatics that he will make his season debut at the Etoile de Besseges cycling tour in France at the beginning of February.
This is a race where Jaan Kirsipuu once shone, with as many as 13 stage victories to his name. This year's Etoile de Besseges will take place from February 5th to 9th and consists of five stages – four group rides followed by a 10.6 km individual time trial. After that, Mihkels will participate in the Volta ao Algarve cycling tour in Portugal from February 19th to 23rd, followed by the major classics, with the Paris-Nice cycling tour in between.
"Since my previous season ended with the World Championships at the end of September and it was clear I wouldn't be starting the Tour Down Under this year, I was able to start my preparation calmly and relaxed, knowing I had enough time," Mihkels told Bike Fanatics. "In mid-November, I flew to Girona, Spain, for a training camp with the team, and after that to Calpe, where I am still. The preparation has gone without setbacks; I've been able to do all the necessary work. Soon, the next team camp in Mallorca awaits, and then the first start of the season."
What are the goals for the first half of the season? "I haven't thought about it specifically yet. There's no pressure; I want to ride as well as possible. If possible, win a stage on some tour and be in contention in the major classics," Mihkels replied.
