Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates - XRG), the reigning Tour de France and Giro d'Italia winner and world road race champion, is among the nominees for the prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards. In the Sportsman of the Year category, other contenders include tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen, swimmer Léon Marchand, and pole vaulter Armand Duplantis.
The 26-year-old Slovenian is considered to have a strong chance of winning the award, as it would be a unique achievement in cycling history. Lance Armstrong (in 2003) was previously honored, but the award was later revoked due to a doping scandal.
Among cyclists, mountain bike cross-country Olympic champion Tom Pidcock (Q36.5 Pro Cycling) is also nominated in the World Action Sportsperson of the Year category, alongside skateboarder Yuto Horigome and snowboarder Chloe Kim.
The nominees for the Laureus Awards are selected by international media representatives, and the winners are chosen by the 69-member Laureus World Sports Academy, composed of sports legends. Last year, the award for men went to tennis player Novak Djokovic, and for women to footballer Aitana Bonmatí.
This year's ceremony will take place on April 21 in Madrid.
