Italian police arrested Latvian ex-world champion

Italian police arrested Romāns Vainšteins, who was crowned world champion in the road race in 2000, at Bergamo airport in connection with unpaid child support.

The 52-year-old Vainšteins had arrived by plane from Latvia when his hands were cuffed on board and he was taken to the police station by law enforcement officers. Vainšteins is divorced but has not paid the legally required child support for his daughter living in Bergamo.

In 2018, his daughter sued her father because he had not paid child support since 2013 and owed her 70,000 euros. Based on this, an Italian court issued an arrest warrant. Vainšteins must spend 4 months behind bars, but it is unknown whether his daughter has any hope of receiving the unpaid money or not.
