The Almeria one-day race took place on February 15th, but the final results were only settled yesterday, nine days later. The photo finish of the group sprint sparked a lot of discussion.
First place went to Biniam Girmay (NSN Pro Cycling) ahead of Milan Fretin (Cofidis). While Matteo Moschetti (Pinarello-Q36.5), who also participated in the podium ceremony, was initially declared the third-place finisher, Dylan Groenewegen (Unibet-Rose Rockets) was promoted to third place after a thorough analysis of the photo finish.
Unibet-Rose Rockets challenged the result, and it proved successful. "You haven't thrown those flowers away yet, have you?" Unibet-Rose Rockets asked ironically on social media, addressing the Pinarello-Q36.5 team.
No new award ceremony will be held, but Unibet-Rose Rockets will receive 25 additional points in the UCI standings.
